The Hole-in-the-Wall Hiking Park Entrance is just one kilometer from the ferry terminal (turn right). Follow the signs to the Old Airport Road. The most popular hike is 10 minutes from a parking area through a wooded trail to the cliffs then left to the famous rock arch known as the Hole in the Wall (HITW on signs). This egg shaped hole was carved by the ocean probably 10,000 years ago and now its base is just at the high tide line. From this point, visitors can return to the parking area or begin hiking east along the edge of the cliffs enjoying spectacular vistas over Whale Cove and the Bay of Fundy. Four sardine weirs extend out from the cliffs where seals are often observed enjoying a free lunch of trapped herring. This is the feeding area for whales, so listen and watch for the noisy finbacks or minkes. Thanks to a hiking Guide Map provided, you can circle back to your vehicle on your choice of the many campground roads or trails. And, as always, there are birds, both the land and sea varieties. Grand Manan is a key destination for bird watchers, especially during migration times.
There is an entry fee (individual, carload and group rates) to obtain a Day Pass to the Hiking Park. You are provided with a Guide Map showing the trails, viewing sites and weirs and write-ups on the points of interest. Staff will provide local information and happily answer questions. Discovery TrailFor children of all ages! When you check-in you will be provided with not only a “Self-Guided” tour map but, for the children, a checklist of partially hidden (or disguised) objects. The Discovery Trail is actually the 10 minute long trail used to reach the Hole in the Wall. Look for objects like a giant frog and a funny bunny. At the Hole in the Wall you can imagine animal faces, on the outside of the arch, maybe even an Indian Chief with red hair! Remember you are in Whale Cove so yell “thaar she blows” if you see whales. ENJOY but BE CAREFUL. Pets welcome if on a leash. Check with staff for a credit of your Day Pass cost against the camping fee should you decide to stay in our coastal wilderness Campground! Imagine! -- camping under the stars, moon on the water, ocean waves lapping (or crashing) against the cliffs, whales communicating in the night, the scent of junipers and spruce trees -- read on for details.
